Next End Photo Radar Meeting
Wed. Feb. 8 at Guyos on the Trail 5:30
There will be an end photo radar meeting on Wednesday, February the 8th at Guyos on the Trail beginning at 5:30. At that meeting we will be coordinating our activities for the February 13th Globe City Hall meeting in which the citizens will demand that council end the contract with Reflex. According the contract between Redflex and the City of Globe it would require a 2/3 vote by the council to remove the cameras. If they refuse to remove the camera, then the voters remove them during the next election. It’s that simple, at least it should be. At the meeting on the 8th we’ll figure out who wants to speak, who wants to stay in their car, who wants to help fill the park outside the meeting. Together we can reignite the power of the majority and start returning the service of our local government to the people. For more information call 928-961-2700.

TRIAL SET FOR JEREMIAH STEVENS
by Ted Lake
Federal Judge Susan R. Bolton has ordered trial for 31 year old Jeremiah Stevens of San Carlos charged with the murder of Matt Stauffer, Jr,  to begin April 3rd in U.S. District Court in Phoenix. Stevens, who is in federal custody appeared January 5 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michelle H. Burns where his financial affidavit was taken and a defense attorney was appointed by the court.  However, Magistrate Burns ordered Stevens to continued to be held in federal custody because " There is a serious risk the defendant will flee; no condition or combination of any conditions will reasonably assure the appearance of the defendant as required and that no conditions will reasonably assure the safety of others and the community (of San Carlos)."
Mat Stauffer, Jr, also 31 years of age from San Carlos, a father of six children, was reportedly shot and killed by a co worker he had given a ride on the Apache Reservation during May of last year.
A federal grand jury on August 11, 2011 in Phoenix issued an eight count indictment against Jeremiah Stevens for the alleged murder of Stauffer, also for threatening persons who had knowledge or information about the case with a gun in addition to a number of charges of witness tampering
The Grand Jury indictment claims on May 13, 2011, Jeremiah Stevens with malice and forethought, willfully killed Mat Stauffer, Jr by shooting him with a gun. The indictment also has allegations claiming the defendant threaten physical force against Luke Darren Brown, Emma Michelle Brown, Davidson Ward, Jr, Richardo Burdette Jr, and other persons, with the intent to delay, hinder or prevent their giving of information to authorities about the murder or possible murder of Mat Stauffer, Jr.  It was further claimed in the grand jury indictment Stevens did use and brandish a firearm in tampering with witnesses in this case.  Federal Judge Susan R. Bolton in her April 3rd trial order for Stevens also set a deadline for pretrial motions to be filled by February 24, 2012

Opinion: Jacob Napolitano is a customer of the court. Recidivist are to Gila County Superior Court, what regulars are to a bar. They are their bread and butter. Rehabilitating offenders would be like a bar holding AA meetings. It wouldn't be good for business!

 Michael Madrid Former
Miami Resident Arrest on Charges
of Child Molestation
Chandler PD Looking
for Additional Victims

Thursday, January 26, 2012
Chandler Police arrest former Miami resident 45-year-old Michael Madrid
on child molestation and sexual abuse charges.  According to the criminal complaint, Madrid allegedly sexually assaulted at least two girls between 2005 and 2006. Chandler Police first heard about this case in 2006, but the mother of the victims didn't want the investigation to move forward until last year. The girls were 9 and 11 when the alleged abuse began. One day after their mom reported it, she decided she didn't want to pursue charges. Police say she didn't want her girls to go through the investigation process, given the alleged molester was a relative. But now that they're older, police say their mother decided last August to re-open the case. Madrid was arrested on seven counts of molestation of a child and three counts of sexual abuse. We called Chandler Police Sgt. Joe Favazzo and asked him if they were looking into weather or not there were any potential victim’s in the Globe/Miami area. He said while they were not aware of Madrid’s activities while he lived he our area, he encourages anyone who knows of someone or who might themselves have been victimized by Michael Madrid to call the Chandler Police at 480-782-4130.

Globe Man Killed in Fatal Accident
Thursday, January 26, 2012
53-year-old Mario Spadafore of Globe was killed yesterday after a semi-truck crossed the centerline, colliding with Spadafore, who was riding his motorcycle in the opposite direction near milepost 170 on highway 77 yesterday at around 1 in the afternoon. Globe police tell us Spadafore was killed instantly.  They also say that impairment did not appear to be a factor but that they are waiting on the results of the truck driver’s blood analysis to see if any charges will be filed.   We would like to commend all first responders for their professionalism and compassion on what was said to be a horrific accident scene.

Christmas Eve Day Bank Robbery in Globe
On December 24th, just after 10:00 a.m., Globe Police Department Officers responded to a hold-up at the Bank of the West on U.S. Highway 60.

A bank teller reported that a male suspect walked into the bank, left a package on the counter with blinking lights claiming the device was a bomb. The suspect demanded money and displayed a handgun as well.
After obtaining money from the clerk, the suspect left the bank, got on a bicycle, and rode behind the bank to a location nearby where he was believed to have been picked up in a vehicle. The suspect was able to get over $10,000.00 in U.S. currency. He was described as a tall, thin male approximately 5’ 10" to 6’ tall. He had a darker complexion and could be either White or Hispanic. The suspect was wearing a dark colored wig, dark sunglasses and a ball cap.

The Bomb Squad wall called out to examine the alleged explosive device and it was determined to be a hoax device. One handgun (air gun) was left behind on the counter top by the suspect as well. The F.B.I. was called out to assist with this investigation and responded to the scene as well.

The suspect is still at large and anyone with any information is encouraged to contact Detective Sergeant Steve Shaw at the Globe Police Department at (928) 425-5751. Callers may remain anonymous.

The Churches Chicken next to the bank was evacuated for some time during the incident.

Marijuana Dispensaries targeted by Feds
10/07/11
-The federal government has given the state of California medical marijuana dispensaries just 45 days to shut down. If they fail to do so, the Feds have gaurantee make arrest,  confiscate property, and shut down the medical marijuana industry in the state. This is a game change for dispensaries her in Arizona. Voters narrowly approved medical marijuana last year. Dispensaries here in Arizona have been on hold after Governor Jan Brewer and Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne filed a suit asking the federal government for a ruling on how the law might affect state workers. If the new developments in California are any clue, then the future of medical marijuana in Arizona might be shaky at best

New Droid Cell Phones for Gila County Employees
How Many, 3 That We Know Of, So Far
We picked up the public record request regarding the $1,700 worth of equipment purchases that we found on the County’s February 2011 Verizon Cell Phone bill statement.  It took some time because the detailed statement was first ready, then it wasn’t, then it was.   In February the taxpayers furnished Gila County Assistant Manager/Library Director/Public Information Officer Jacque Griffin, Gila County IT Director Daryl Griffin and Gila County Supervisor's Staff Specialist Pam Fisher with Motorola Droid phones, the newest, state of the art cell phones available. In keeping with Gila County Policy, these purchases are likely of great need to achieve the high standard of customer service Gila County is known for.
3 Deputies also purchased cell phones with GPS, at $130 each. These purchases are truly crucial for their position. Anything to help our law enforcement officers better prepared to protect our community is not questioned.

 Creating a Defensible Space
On and Around Your Property
When it comes to reporting a fire hazards, A.J Howell with Tri-City fire said, "Waiting until after a fire to report a known hazard is not a suitable alternative to being proactive."

In light of recent fires KQSS would like residents to know that the first step to keeping your property safe is to clear debris such as dead grass, wood, dry shrubs and trash, anything that could fuel a fire near your home or surrounding structures. While clearing your property, look at surrounding properties. If you find hazardous conditions surrounding your property you can alert your neighbors. If the property is owned by the town, city or county these are the steps you need to take

Shirley Dawson's Smoke and MirrorsLiar
In another situation that we covered regarding Shirley Dawson, county employees told us that Dawson basically appointed the Elections Director, despite the fact that there were employees with more experience who had applied for the position. One election employee, Eric Mariscal, was passed over for the position despite the fact he says the interview board had selected him for the position.
The newly appointed elections director had to attend special training, the former elections director was rehired by contract to train the new director, and and the county contracted outside company to assist at a cost to taxpayers of a ¼ of a million dollars for just over a year of services.
Gila County  Supervisor Shirley Dawson called us to tell us that the company they hired, was hired to assist with redistrciting, nothing more. A review of the contract between Gila County and Elections Operations Services mentions nothing about redistricting. See for yourself here
